Antonio Guzmán Blanco

Antonio Guzmán Blanco (1829–1899) was a Venezuelan military leader and politician who served three presidential terms and dominated national politics from 1870 to 1888.

Federal War: A Venezuelan civil war fought from 1859 to 1863 between federalists and centralists. The war helped create the military and political conditions that brought Guzmán Blanco to power.
Venezuelan secularization: The transfer of social and institutional authority from the Catholic Church to secular state institutions in Venezuela. Guzmán Blanco restricted church power and expanded state control over education and public life.
