Anwar Sadat

Anwar Sadat was Egypt’s president from 1970 until his assassination in 1981. He made peace with Israel through the Camp David Accords and shared the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize.

Gamal Abdel Nasser: Egyptian military officer and president from 1956 to 1970 who led the country through Arab nationalism and major regional conflicts. Sadat served as vice president under Nasser and succeeded him as president.
Camp David Accords: The 1978 agreements between Egypt and Israel that established a framework for peace and addressed Palestinian self-government. Sadat negotiated these accords with Begin at a summit mediated by Carter.
Six-Day War: The June 1967 Arab-Israeli war in which Israel captured the Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza, and the Golan Heights. Egypt’s defeat and loss of Sinai shaped the conflict Sadat sought to resolve.
Nobel Peace Prize: An annual international award honoring people and organizations for work toward peace. Sadat shared the 1978 prize with Begin for their efforts toward peace between Egypt and Israel.
Menachem Begin: Israeli prime minister from 1977 to 1983 who negotiated the Camp David Accords with Egypt. His negotiations with Sadat produced the framework for Egyptian-Israeli peace.
Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty: The 1979 treaty that ended the state of war between Egypt and Israel and established diplomatic relations. It turned the Camp David framework into a formal peace between the countries.
War of Attrition: A 1967–1970 conflict between Egypt and Israel, fought mainly across the Suez Canal front. Sadat inherited this unresolved confrontation when he became president.
Arab League: A regional organization of Arab states founded in 1945 to coordinate political, economic, and cultural cooperation. Egypt’s peace with Israel led Arab League members to suspend Egypt and relocate its headquarters.
Jimmy Carter: U.S. president from 1977 to 1981 who mediated the Camp David negotiations. Carter hosted Sadat and Begin at Camp David and helped secure their agreement.
