Aoraki / Mount Cook

Aoraki / Mount Cook is a 3,724-meter peak in New Zealand’s Southern Alps and the country’s highest mountain. It stands within Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park.

Southern Alps: A mountain range running along much of New Zealand’s South Island. Aoraki / Mount Cook is the range’s highest peak, formed within its uplifted spine.
Māori mythology: The diverse traditional narratives and spiritual beliefs of Māori, the Indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand. Māori traditions explain Aoraki’s origin and connect the mountain with Ngāi Tahu identity.
Tom Fyfe: A New Zealand mountaineer who took part in the first recorded ascent of Aoraki / Mount Cook. He reached the summit with George Graham and Jack Clarke in 1894.
Mount Cook Village: A settlement and visitor base in Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. It provides accommodation and services for climbers and visitors to the mountain.
Mount Tasman: The second-highest mountain in New Zealand, in the Southern Alps near Aoraki / Mount Cook. It is the peak’s nearest high neighbor, but Aoraki / Mount Cook is taller.
Alpine fault: A major plate-boundary fault running along the western side of New Zealand’s South Island. Its motion contributes to the rapid uplift that builds the Southern Alps around the peak.
Ngāi Tahu: The principal Māori iwi of much of Te Waipounamu, New Zealand’s South Island. Ngāi Tahu holds ancestral and cultural relationships with Aoraki and the surrounding lands.
George Graham: A New Zealand mountaineer and guide active in the Southern Alps in the late nineteenth century. He joined the first recorded ascent of Aoraki / Mount Cook in 1894.
Mount Cook Airline: A New Zealand regional airline that operated under the Mount Cook name from 1963 until its 2019 merger into Air New Zealand. Scenic flights and transport helped make the mountain accessible to visitors beyond climbers.
Mount Everest: Earth’s highest mountain above sea level, on the border of Nepal and China. It provides a global altitude comparison: Aoraki / Mount Cook is far lower but remains New Zealand’s highest peak.
