Aortic aneurysm

An aortic aneurysm is an abnormal, persistent enlargement of the aorta. It may occur in the chest or abdomen and can rupture, causing life-threatening bleeding.

Aortic wall: The layered tissue that forms the wall of the aorta. Weakening or degeneration of these layers allows the aorta to enlarge.
Aorta: The body's largest artery, carrying blood from the heart to the systemic circulation. An aneurysm is defined by enlargement of this artery.
Ultrasonography: An imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal structures. It is widely used to screen for and monitor abdominal aortic aneurysms.
Aortic rupture: A full-thickness break in the aorta that causes blood to escape from the vessel. Rupture of an aneurysm can cause catastrophic internal bleeding.

Aortic dissection: A tear in the aortic inner layer that lets blood split the wall's layers apart. Dissection is distinct from aneurysm, though both can affect the aorta and occur together.
Abdominal aortic aneurysm: An aneurysm in the portion of the aorta within the abdomen. This common subtype differs from thoracic aneurysms in risk factors and treatment.
Computed tomography angiography: A CT imaging technique that depicts blood vessels after injection of contrast material. It maps aneurysm size and anatomy for diagnosis and procedural planning.
Aortic regurgitation: Backward flow of blood through the aortic valve into the left ventricle. An enlarged aortic root may prevent the valve leaflets from closing properly.
Aortic aneurysm genetics: The study of inherited variants that influence susceptibility to aortic aneurysm. Genetic factors help explain why aneurysms develop in some people without typical risk profiles.
