Apache Wars

The Apache Wars were a series of armed conflicts between Apache peoples and Spanish, Mexican, and United States forces in the American Southwest from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries.

Spanish colonization of the Americas: Spain’s conquest, settlement, and rule of territories across the Americas beginning in the late fifteenth century. Spanish missions and frontier settlements brought Apache communities into conflict with colonial authority.
Cochise: A Chiricahua Apache leader who resisted U.S. military campaigns in the 1860s and early 1870s. His resistance became central to the conflict in southeastern Arizona.
Apache scouts: Apache men who served as trackers and soldiers for the U.S. Army during campaigns against other Apache groups. Their tracking expertise was central to U.S. pursuit operations.
Chiricahua Apache: An Apache people whose homeland spans parts of present-day Arizona, New Mexico, and northern Mexico. Chiricahua communities endured some of the longest and most prominent campaigns.
Chichimeca War: A prolonged conflict between Spanish colonists and Indigenous peoples of north-central Mexico from 1550 to 1590. It shaped Spanish frontier strategies later used in northern New Spain.
Geronimo: A Bedonkohe Apache leader who resisted Mexican and U.S. forces and surrendered in 1886. His final campaigns marked the end of organized Apache armed resistance to U.S. rule.
Treaty of Santa Fe: A 1852 agreement between the United States and Navajo leaders intended to establish peace after the Mexican–American War. It illustrates treaty-making on the new U.S. frontier, though it concerned Navajo rather than Apache relations.
Fort Marion prisoners: Native American prisoners held at Fort Marion in Florida after U.S. military campaigns, including Chiricahua Apache people. Their imprisonment exemplifies the distant exile imposed after surrender.
Pueblo Revolt: The 1680 uprising in which Pueblo peoples expelled Spanish settlers from New Mexico for twelve years. Its aftermath altered Spanish military priorities and alliances across the region.
Mangas Coloradas: A Mimbreño Apache leader who fought Mexican and U.S. expansion in the mid-nineteenth century. His alliance with Cochise helped organize resistance during a pivotal period.
