Apatheism

Apatheism is indifference toward whether God or gods exist, treating the question as irrelevant to one’s life rather than affirming or denying it.

Atheism: Atheism is the absence of belief in gods or the belief that no gods exist. Unlike apatheism, atheism concerns belief about gods, even when the question matters little personally.
Pragmatism: Pragmatism is a philosophical tradition that evaluates ideas partly through their practical consequences. A pragmatic outlook can explain why someone treats divine existence as irrelevant to action.
Nontheism: Nontheism is a broad category of positions that do not affirm belief in a god or gods. Apatheism can be grouped with non-theistic positions, though indifference alone does not settle belief.
Religious affiliation: Religious affiliation is a person's identification with a religious tradition or community. Indifference to divine existence does not by itself determine whether someone joins or retains a religious community.
Agnosticism: Agnosticism holds that the existence of gods is unknown or unknowable. Agnosticism addresses what can be known; apatheism sets aside whether the question matters.
Religious skepticism: Religious skepticism is critical doubt about religious claims, doctrines, or experiences. Skepticism evaluates religious claims; apatheism may leave them unexamined because they seem inconsequential.
Ignosticism: Ignosticism holds that the question of God's existence is meaningless or insufficiently defined until God is clearly specified. Both can suspend engagement with the question, but ignosticism challenges its formulation rather than its importance.
Religious practice: Religious practice consists of rituals, observances, and activities associated with a religious tradition. Apatheists may participate in inherited or communal practices without treating God's existence as decisive.
Theism: Theism is belief in the existence of at least one god. Theism gives the existence question an affirmative answer, unlike apatheism’s indifference.
Secularism: Secularism is the principle of separating religious authority from civic institutions or public affairs. A secular public life can make religious truth claims less central without requiring personal apatheism.
