Apiaceae

Apiaceae is a family of flowering plants that includes carrots, celery, parsley, and many aromatic herbs. Its members commonly bear small flowers in umbrella-shaped clusters called umbels.

Umbel: A flower cluster whose stalks radiate from one point, forming an umbrella-like shape. The characteristic inflorescence gives the family its common name, the umbellifers.
Carrot: A cultivated root vegetable, usually orange, derived from the species Daucus carota. Carrot is a familiar food crop in the family.
Poison hemlock: A highly toxic plant native to Europe and North Africa, now widespread elsewhere. This dangerous Apiaceae member can be mistaken for edible relatives.
Carl Linnaeus: A Swedish botanist who formalized binomial nomenclature and helped establish modern biological classification. Linnaeus described many Apiaceae species within the system that shaped botanical naming.
