Apology

Plato’s dialogue presents Socrates’ defense speech at his trial in Athens in 399 BCE. It portrays his examination of the charges, his account of his philosophical mission, and his response to conviction and death.

Socrates: An Athenian philosopher whose questioning of conventional beliefs shaped Western philosophy. The dialogue presents his speech and character during the trial.
Socratic irony: A rhetorical stance in which Socrates presents himself as ignorant while exposing gaps in others’ claims. His professed lack of expertise contrasts with the confidence of his accusers and witnesses.

Athenian democracy: The system of citizen government practiced in ancient Athens, including decision-making by large juries. A citizen jury judged Socrates under Athens’ democratic legal institutions.
Meletus: An Athenian accuser who brought charges against Socrates alongside Anytus and Lycon. The dialogue gives Meletus a direct exchange that exposes tensions in the prosecution’s claims.
