Aponeurosis

An aponeurosis is a broad, flat sheet of dense connective tissue that anchors a muscle or transmits its force to bones or other structures.

Dense regular connective tissue: Connective tissue with densely packed collagen fibers arranged mainly in parallel bundles. Aponeuroses are collagen-rich sheets built to withstand tension along their fibers.
Linea alba: A fibrous midline structure of the anterior abdominal wall formed by interwoven aponeuroses. It is formed where the abdominal muscle aponeuroses meet and interlace.
Muscle contraction: The process by which muscle fibers generate tension, often producing shortening or resisting an external load. Aponeuroses receive and distribute the tension generated by contracting muscle fibers.
Intermuscular septum: A connective-tissue partition that separates muscle groups, often attaching to bone. Unlike an aponeurosis serving a muscle’s attachment or force transfer, a septum primarily divides compartments.
Collagen: A family of structural proteins that forms strong fibers in connective tissues. Collagen fibers give aponeuroses their tensile strength.
External oblique muscle: The most superficial muscle of the lateral abdominal wall, whose fibers run inferomedially. Its broad aponeurosis contributes to the anterior abdominal wall and linea alba.
Muscle architecture: The arrangement and orientation of muscle fibers, fascicles, and connective tissues within a muscle. Fiber orientation determines how force reaches an aponeurosis.
Ligament: A band of connective tissue that connects bones and helps stabilize joints. Ligaments link bones, whereas aponeuroses usually transmit force from muscle.
Skeletal muscle: Voluntary, striated muscle attached to the skeleton or other structures. Aponeuroses commonly anchor skeletal muscles or carry their force onward.
Palmar aponeurosis: A thick triangular sheet of fascia in the palm that protects underlying structures and anchors skin. It is a prominent hand aponeurosis with a distinct clinical role in Dupuytren disease.
