Appalachian temperate rainforest

A humid forest ecosystem in the southern Appalachian Mountains, sustained by high rainfall and frequent fog. Its rich plant communities include exceptionally diverse mosses, ferns, and trees.

Southern Appalachian Mountains: A mountain region of the southeastern United States, extending from southwestern Virginia through western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee into Georgia. These mountains contain the rainforest’s core high-elevation habitat.
Fraser fir: An evergreen conifer native to the highest elevations of the southern Appalachian Mountains. It dominates cool spruce–fir forests near the rainforest’s upper elevations.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park: A protected national park spanning the Tennessee–North Carolina border in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Its high rainfall and rich forests make it a prominent protected example.
Greenbrier: A common name for woody, often thorny climbing plants in the genus Smilax. Dense greenbrier tangles are a familiar feature of some Appalachian forest understories.
Balsam woolly adelgid: An invasive insect that attacks fir trees, including Fraser fir in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Its damage has transformed high-elevation fir populations and forest structure.
Orographic precipitation: Precipitation produced when moist air rises over terrain, cools, and condenses. Mountain uplift helps deliver the heavy rainfall that sustains these forests.
Red spruce: A long-lived conifer native to northeastern North America and high elevations of the southern Appalachians. Its stands form a major high-elevation forest community in the region.
Southern Appalachian spruce restoration: Conservation work to restore high-elevation spruce–fir forests in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Restoration targets forests damaged by logging, pests, and other disturbances.
Carolina hemlock: A hemlock species native to the southern Appalachian Mountains and nearby southeastern uplands. It grows on rocky slopes within the region’s moist forest landscapes.
Red spruce decline: The reduction of red spruce in parts of the southern Appalachian Mountains following logging and environmental stress. Its recovery remains tied to forest history, pollution, and changing climate.
