Appliqué

Appliqué is a decorative technique in which fabric shapes are attached to a larger textile surface. The shapes may be stitched, fused, or otherwise secured in place.

Raw-edge appliqué: An appliqué method that leaves fabric edges exposed, often held by close stitching or adhesive. Its exposed edges distinguish it from methods that turn or cover the fabric edges.
Quilting: The process of stitching together layers of fabric, usually a top, batting, and backing. Appliqué often decorates a quilt top before its layers are joined.
Hawaiian quilting: A quilting tradition known for large, often symmetrical appliqué designs cut from folded fabric. Its bold motifs make appliqué the central design method.
Bayeux Tapestry: An embroidered linen cloth depicting the Norman conquest of England, made in the eleventh century. Despite its name, it uses embroidered and laid-on details rather than woven tapestry construction.
Mary Lee Bendolph: An American quilter from Gee's Bend, Alabama, known for inventive compositions in cloth. Her work connects appliqué and piecing with a living community quilting tradition.
Turned-edge appliqué: An appliqué method in which fabric edges are folded under before they are attached. Folding the edges under creates a clean outline around each shape.
Patchwork: A textile construction method that joins fabric pieces edge to edge to form a larger surface. Patchwork builds a surface from adjoining pieces; appliqué places shapes onto one.
Baltimore album quilt: A nineteenth-century American quilt style made of blocks with elaborate appliqué motifs. Its detailed blocks showcase appliqué as a form of pictorial needlework.
Coptic textiles: Late antique and medieval textiles associated with Christian communities in Egypt. Some surviving examples combine applied fabric elements with woven or embroidered decoration.
Gee's Bend quilts: Quilts made by generations of African American women in the isolated Alabama community of Gee's Bend. Some works use appliqué within compositions shaped by local materials and practices.
