Aquaculture feed

Aquaculture feed is food formulated or selected to meet the nutritional needs of farmed aquatic organisms. It may use manufactured diets, natural food organisms, or both.

Fish nutrition: The study of nutrients and feeding requirements in fish. Fish diets must supply energy and essential nutrients in species-appropriate proportions.
Extruded feed: Feed processed under heat, pressure, and shear into expanded, porous pellets. Extrusion produces floating or sinking pellets suited to different feeding behaviors and farming systems.
Salmon feed: Formulated diets used to raise salmon in aquaculture. Salmon feed illustrates how marine ingredients have been replaced while maintaining growth and seafood quality.
Fishmeal: A protein-rich meal produced mainly from processed whole fish or fish-processing by-products. Fishmeal has traditionally supplied concentrated protein in many aquaculture diets.
Insect protein: Protein-rich material derived from insects for use in food or animal feed. Insect meals are being assessed as feed ingredients that could use organic by-products as rearing substrates.
Amino acid: An organic molecule that serves as a building block of proteins. Feed proteins must provide essential amino acids that cultured animals cannot synthesize adequately.
Apparent digestibility coefficient: An estimate of the fraction of a dietary nutrient absorbed rather than excreted in feces. Digestibility measurements show which feed ingredients make nutrients available to cultured animals.
Shrimp feed: Formulated diets designed for the nutritional and feeding needs of farmed shrimp. Shrimp feed must remain accessible on pond bottoms and account for the animals’ feeding habits.
Fish oil: Oil extracted from fish or fish-processing by-products, rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oil supplies essential fats, but its use links farmed seafood to marine resource demand.
Single-cell protein: Protein-rich biomass produced from microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts, or algae. Microbial proteins could supply feed nutrients with less dependence on agricultural land and wild fish.
