Aquascaping

Aquascaping is the art of arranging aquatic plants, rocks, wood, and other materials in an aquarium to create a designed underwater landscape.

Aquarium substrate: Material placed on an aquarium bottom to anchor plants and support biological processes. Its texture and nutrients determine how well rooted plants establish in a layout.
Nature aquarium: An aquarium layout inspired by natural landscapes and arranged with plants, stones, and wood. This style makes natural scenery the central design goal.
Takashi Amano: A Japanese photographer and aquarist who popularized nature-style planted aquariums. His compositions and books brought a distinctive landscape approach to aquascaping.
Fishkeeping: The practice of keeping fish in aquariums or ponds. Aquascaping emphasizes visual layout, while fishkeeping centers on maintaining fish.
Aquatic plants: Plants adapted to grow partly or entirely in water. Their forms, growth rates, and light needs supply much of an aquascape’s structure.
Iwagumi: A Japanese stone-centered aquascaping style that arranges a small number of rocks in a deliberate composition. Its restrained stone arrangements show how focal hierarchy can guide a layout.
Aqua Design Amano: A Japanese company founded by Takashi Amano that makes aquarium equipment and publishes aquascaping materials. Its products and publications helped circulate Amano’s design approach.
Aquarium gardening: The cultivation and maintenance of plants in an aquarium. Plant care overlaps with aquascaping, though gardening need not involve a designed landscape.
Driftwood: Water-worn wood used as a structural and decorative element in aquariums and other settings. Its branching shapes create focal lines and surfaces for mosses and epiphytes.
Dutch-style aquarium: A planted aquarium style emphasizing dense groups of contrasting aquatic plants. It prioritizes plant color, texture, and grouping over hardscape scenery.
