Arab Cold War

The Arab Cold War was a mid-twentieth-century rivalry among Arab states, especially Egypt and Saudi Arabia, over regional leadership and political models. It was fought through diplomacy, propaganda, and proxy conflicts rather than direct war between the principal rivals.

Proxy war: A conflict in which outside powers support opposing forces rather than fight each other directly. Egypt and Saudi Arabia backed rival factions in Yemen while avoiding direct war.
United Arab Republic: A political union of Egypt and Syria that existed from 1958 to 1961. The union embodied Nasser’s bid to lead Arab unity, but Syria’s withdrawal exposed its limits.
Gamal Abdel Nasser: Egyptian president from 1956 to 1970 and a leading advocate of Arab nationalism. His regional ambitions made Egypt the principal challenger to Saudi influence.
Egyptian Revolution of 1952: A military coup that ended Egypt’s monarchy and brought the Free Officers to power. The new republic became a forceful model challenging established Arab monarchies.
Arab nationalism: A political movement advocating unity and shared identity among Arabic-speaking peoples. The rivalry expanded its reach while exposing the gap between unity rhetoric and state interests.
Yemeni Civil War (1962–1970): A conflict between Yemen’s republican government and royalist forces after the 1962 coup. Egyptian troops and Saudi support for royalists made Yemen the rivalry’s central proxy battlefield.
Syrian Crisis of 1957: A period of political and military tension in Syria involving domestic factions and competing foreign powers. Egyptian influence in Syria alarmed Saudi Arabia and other governments before the formal union.
Faisal of Saudi Arabia: King of Saudi Arabia from 1964 to 1975, known for expanding the kingdom’s regional role. He strengthened Saudi opposition to Nasser’s revolutionary influence and later negotiated a Yemen settlement.
Suez Crisis: The 1956 conflict triggered by Egypt’s nationalization of the Suez Canal and the subsequent invasion by Britain, France, and Israel. Nasser’s political victory elevated his prestige and intensified Saudi concern about Egyptian influence.
Arab socialism: A set of Arab political programs combining state-led development and social reform with Arab nationalist aims. Egypt’s model offered a political and economic alternative to Saudi Arabia’s monarchy.
