Knowra Arabian Peninsula Arabian Peninsula A large peninsula in southwestern Asia bounded by the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, and Persian Gulf. Its arid interior is bordered by coastal plains and mountain ranges.
Rub' al Khali : A vast sand desert in the southern Arabian Peninsula, spanning parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. This immense desert dominates the peninsula’s southern interior.
Bab el-Mandeb : A strait connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden between Yemen and Djibouti and Eritrea. This chokepoint marks the peninsula’s southwestern maritime gateway.
Petroleum in Saudi Arabia : Saudi Arabia’s large petroleum industry, built on extensive oil reserves and export infrastructure. Its oil fields and ports make the peninsula central to global energy supply.
Early human migrations out of Africa : The prehistoric dispersals of human populations from Africa into Eurasia. Southern Arabia may have served as a route for some early movements beyond Africa.
Levant : A historical and geographic region of the eastern Mediterranean, including areas such as Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and Palestine. The Levant’s Mediterranean climate and dense settlement differ from much of the peninsula’s interior.
Najd : A high plateau occupying much of central Saudi Arabia. This plateau forms the peninsula’s central upland.
Strait of Hormuz : A narrow waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. It is the peninsula’s northeastern outlet to the open ocean.
Persian Gulf oil and gas industry : The extraction and export of petroleum and natural gas from countries bordering the Persian Gulf. The peninsula’s eastern states hold major reserves and export them through nearby straits.
Ancient South Arabian kingdoms : Ancient states of southern Arabia, including Saba, Qataban, Hadramaut, and Ma'in. These kingdoms built settled societies around agriculture and long-distance trade.
Sahara : The world’s largest hot desert, spanning much of North Africa. It is another vast desert region, but lies west of the Red Sea and has different regional geography.
