Araceae

Araceae is a family of flowering plants, commonly called the aroid family, whose members often bear tiny flowers on a spadix surrounded by a spathe.

Spadix: A dense, usually fleshy spike bearing small flowers along an elongated axis. Aroids commonly arrange their flowers on this distinctive inflorescence.
Philodendron: A genus of tropical flowering plants in the aroid family, many cultivated as houseplants. Its climbing and foliage forms make it one of the best-known ornamental aroids.
Amorphophallus titanum: A Sumatran aroid that produces one of the largest unbranched flowering structures in the plant kingdom. Its enormous, foul-smelling inflorescence is a dramatic aroid example.
APG IV system: A 2016 classification of flowering plants based on phylogenetic evidence, published by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group. It places Araceae within the monocot order Alismatales.
Cyclanthaceae: A family of tropical American flowering plants, some of which resemble aroids in leaf form and inflorescence. Its members can look aroid-like but belong to a separate monocot family.
Spathe: A modified leaf or bract that surrounds or subtends an inflorescence. In aroids, it commonly encloses or displays the spadix.
Anthurium: A genus of tropical aroids known for conspicuous spathes and spadices. Many species are grown for long-lasting ornamental inflorescences.
Wolffia: A genus of tiny, rootless aquatic flowering plants in the duckweed lineage. These minute aroids contrast sharply with the family’s giant species.
Alismatales: An order of flowering plants that includes Araceae and several aquatic plant families. This is the order to which the aroid family belongs.
Pandanaceae: A family of tropical monocots that includes screw pines and related plants. Its flowering structures can invite comparison with aroids, despite distinct family membership.
