Arakan Mountains

The Arakan Mountains are a north–south mountain range in western Myanmar, separating the Rakhine coastal plain from the country’s central basin.

Rakhine State: A coastal state in western Myanmar, bordering Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal. The range forms the rugged eastern backdrop to Rakhine’s coastal settlements.
Indian Plate: A tectonic plate carrying the Indian subcontinent and parts of the surrounding Indian Ocean floor. Its motion drives convergence along the western edge of Myanmar.

An Pass: A mountain pass through the Arakan Mountains linking central Myanmar with the Rakhine coast. The pass provides a key overland corridor across the barrier.
Central Myanmar Basin: A broad lowland region in central Myanmar drained chiefly by the Irrawaddy River. The basin lies east of the range and has historically been more accessible from the interior.
Bay of Bengal: A northeastern arm of the Indian Ocean bordered by South and Southeast Asia. The range rises inland from the bay along Myanmar’s western margin.
Subduction: The descent of one tectonic plate beneath another into Earth’s mantle. Subduction offshore contributes to the tectonic setting west of the range.
