Arameans

The Arameans were an ancient Semitic-speaking people of the Levant and Mesopotamia whose languages and cultural traditions persist among communities in the Middle East.

Aramaic language: A Northwest Semitic language historically spoken by Arameans and later used widely across the Near East. Aramaic was the defining language of Aramean communities and became a regional lingua franca.
Semitic languages: A language family that includes Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, and several ancient Near Eastern languages. Aramaic belongs to this family, linking Arameans to neighboring linguistic traditions.
Hazael: A ninth-century BCE king of Aram-Damascus who expanded his kingdom’s influence in the Levant. His reign illustrates the power reached by an Aramean ruler.
Imperial Aramaic: A standardized form of Aramaic used for administration across the Achaemenid Persian Empire. Its imperial use extended Aramaic well beyond the former Aramean kingdoms.
Aram-Damascus: An Aramean kingdom centered on Damascus during the first millennium BCE. It was among the most powerful states associated with the Arameans.
Northwest Semitic languages: A branch of Semitic languages that includes Aramaic, Hebrew, Phoenician, and related languages. This branch places Aramaic among the languages of the Levant.
Ben-Hadad III: A king of Aram-Damascus in the early eighth century BCE and successor to Hazael. His reign belongs to the kingdom’s later period before Assyrian dominance.
Achaemenid Empire: The Persian empire founded by Cyrus the Great that ruled much of western and central Asia from the sixth to fourth centuries BCE. Its administration adopted Aramaic as a major written language across a vast territory.
Aram-Naharaim: An ancient regional name for lands in northern Mesopotamia, associated in biblical texts with Aramean groups. The name situates Aramean communities east of the Levant.
Aramean kingdoms: Independent Iron Age states established by Aramean groups in Syria and northern Mesopotamia. These kingdoms show that Arameans formed multiple political communities, not one enduring state.
