Arboreality

Arboreality is a way of life centered on living or moving in trees. It involves adaptations for using trunks, branches, and the spaces among them.

Arboreal locomotion: Movement through trees using branches, trunks, and other elevated supports. This is the movement component of an arboreal way of life.
Sloth: A slow-moving mammal adapted to life in Central and South American trees. Sloths spend most of their lives suspended from branches.
Arboreal adaptation: An inherited trait that improves an organism's ability to live or move in trees. These traits make tree use viable despite falls, gaps, and unstable supports.
Terrestriality: A way of life centered on living or moving on the ground. It contrasts with using trees as the primary setting for daily life.
Grasping: The act of holding an object or support with the hands, feet, or other structures. Grasping lets many tree-dwellers secure themselves to narrow or moving branches.
Koala: An Australian marsupial that feeds mainly on eucalyptus leaves and lives in trees. Koalas use trees for feeding, resting, and shelter.
Grasping foot: A foot whose digits can hold onto branches or other supports. Grasping feet secure animals to branches during climbing and feeding.
Fossoriality: A way of life involving digging or living underground. Underground habitats present a different set of movement and shelter demands.
Balance: The control of body position and stability during movement or stillness. Maintaining stability is difficult on uneven, flexible branches.
Tree kangaroo: A tree-dwelling marsupial of New Guinea and northeastern Australia. Its climbing adaptations contrast with those of ground-dwelling kangaroos.
