Knowra Archaeopteryx Archaeopteryx Archaeopteryx is an extinct genus of feathered theropod dinosaurs from the Late Jurassic. Its fossils combine birdlike features, including flight feathers, with traits such as teeth, clawed fingers, and a long bony tail.
Theropoda : Theropoda is a diverse group of mostly bipedal saurischian dinosaurs that includes modern birds. Archaeopteryx belongs to this dinosaur group, whose anatomy frames its birdlike traits.
Avian flight : Avian flight is powered aerial locomotion in birds, produced by coordinated wing movements and aerodynamic forces. Archaeopteryx had feathered wings, but how capable it was of powered flight remains debated.
Solnhofen limestone : Solnhofen limestone is a Late Jurassic lithographic limestone deposit in Bavaria, Germany, famous for exceptionally preserved fossils. Archaeopteryx specimens from these deposits preserve fine feather impressions.
Confuciusornis : Confuciusornis is an extinct Early Cretaceous bird from China, notable for a toothless beak and long paired tail feathers in some specimens. This later bird had a beak without teeth, unlike Archaeopteryx’s toothed jaws.
Feather : A feather is a branching integumentary structure made of keratin, characteristic of birds and some other dinosaurs. Fossils preserve feathers on Archaeopteryx, including long feathers associated with the wings and tail.
Asymmetrical feather : An asymmetrical feather has vanes of unequal width on either side of its shaft, a shape suited to aerodynamic function. The asymmetry of Archaeopteryx’s flight feathers is evidence relevant to their aerodynamic role.
Richard Owen : Richard Owen was a British anatomist and paleontologist who coined the term Dinosauria and described the first Archaeopteryx skeleton. Owen’s 1863 description established the fossil’s scientific identity.
Microraptor : Microraptor is a small feathered dromaeosaurid dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous of China, known for long feathers on all four limbs. Its four feathered limbs offer a different configuration from Archaeopteryx’s winged forelimbs.
Furcula : The furcula is a fused pair of clavicles found in birds and some non-avian theropod dinosaurs. This wishbone-shaped bone is among Archaeopteryx’s birdlike skeletal features.
Wing loading : Wing loading is an animal’s weight divided by its wing area, influencing flight speed and maneuverability. Estimates of Archaeopteryx’s wing loading help test competing reconstructions of its flight.
