Knowra Archival science Archival science Archival science studies the principles and methods for creating, appraising, arranging, describing, preserving, and providing access to archival records.
Archive : A collection of records preserved because of their continuing value, together with the institution or place that holds them. Archival science distinguishes records kept in context from collections assembled merely by subject.
Records management : The systematic control of records throughout their creation, use, retention, and disposition. Archival decisions depend on sound management before records reach permanent custody.
French Revolution : A period of political upheaval in France from 1789 to 1799 that transformed its government and society. Revolutionary reforms helped establish centralized public archives and civic access to records.
Jenkinsonian archival theory : An archival approach emphasizing records' organic creation, impartiality, and continuous custody by responsible institutions. It contrasts with appraisal models that give archivists stronger authority to select records.
Record (document) : Recorded information created, received, and maintained as evidence or information by a person or organization. Records are the materials whose creation, appraisal, and stewardship archival science addresses.
Appraisal (archives) : The process of determining which records have enduring value and should be preserved permanently. Appraisal selects records for long-term preservation from the much larger body created.
National Archives of France : France's national archival institution, established during the French Revolution to preserve public records. Its creation became an influential model for national archival institutions.
Schellenbergian appraisal : An approach that assesses records for evidential and informational value to determine permanent preservation. It assigns archivists an active selection role unlike strict custodial approaches.
Provenance : The origin and history of an object, including its creators, custody, and relationships to other objects. Provenance preserves evidence about who created records and how they were maintained.
Archival arrangement : The organization of archival records into groups that reflect their creators and relationships. Arrangement makes record structure intelligible while retaining evidence of context.
