Knowra Arctic Ocean circulation Arctic Ocean circulation Arctic Ocean circulation is the movement and mixing of seawater within the Arctic Ocean and through its connections to neighboring oceans, driven by winds, density differences, and tides.
Beaufort Gyre : A wind-driven clockwise circulation in the Canada Basin that gathers freshwater and sea ice. It is the Arctic’s principal wind-driven reservoir of freshwater and a major surface circulation feature.
Thermohaline circulation : Large-scale ocean circulation driven by differences in seawater density associated with temperature and salinity. It supplies the density-driven framework behind deep and intermediate Arctic water movement.
Arctic Ocean observing system : The network of ships, moorings, floats, satellites, and other tools used to measure Arctic Ocean conditions. Observations across the basin and its gateways quantify currents and their changing transports.
Antarctic Circumpolar Current : A powerful eastward current encircling Antarctica through the Southern Ocean. Unlike the Arctic’s semi-enclosed basin circulation, it flows around an open polar continent.
Transpolar Drift : A surface current that carries sea ice and water across the Arctic from Siberia toward Fram Strait. It provides a direct pathway for surface water and ice from the Siberian shelves toward the Atlantic.
Ocean stratification : The layering of ocean water by density, which inhibits mixing between layers. Strong stratification governs how surface circulation interacts with deeper Arctic waters.
Arctic sea-ice export : The movement of sea ice out of the Arctic Ocean, chiefly through Fram Strait and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Circulation determines where and how quickly Arctic ice leaves the basin.
Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation : A system of Atlantic currents that transports warm surface water northward and returns colder deep water southward. It is a broader Atlantic circulation system influenced by, but distinct from, Arctic gateway exchanges.
Arctic halocline : A layer of strong salinity change that separates relatively fresh surface water from deeper Arctic Ocean water. Its density barrier limits vertical mixing and helps preserve distinct circulation layers.
Freshwater flux : The transfer of freshwater into or out of a region through rivers, precipitation, melting, and ocean transport. River runoff and ice melt alter Arctic salinity and therefore water density.
