Ariake Sea

A shallow sea in western Kyushu, Japan, distinguished by extensive tidal flats and one of Japan’s largest tidal ranges.

Tidal flat: A coastal area of mud or sand exposed at low tide and submerged at high tide. These broad intertidal surfaces define much of the sea’s shoreline.
Nori: Edible seaweeds, especially species of the red-algal genus Pyropia, used in Japanese cuisine. The sea’s nori farms depend on its tidal waters and nutrient supply.
Isahaya Bay: A bay on the western side of the Ariake Sea in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. Its reclamation project became the sea’s best-known coastal-management controversy.
Land reclamation in Japan: The conversion of coastal waters and wetlands into land through embankment, drainage, or filling. Reclamation around the sea has reduced and reshaped tidal habitats.

Eutrophication: Excessive nutrient enrichment of water that can trigger algal growth and oxygen depletion. Nutrient balance affects nori cultivation and the sea’s broader ecology.
Yatsushiro Sea: A semi-enclosed sea on the western coast of Kyushu, south of the Ariake Sea. It is a neighboring coastal sea with its own tidal landscapes and fisheries.
