Arian controversy

The Arian controversy was a prolonged fourth-century dispute over whether the Son was eternal and fully divine like the Father or a created being subordinate to him.

Arianism: A theological position associated with Arius that held the Son was not coeternal with the Father. This position supplied the controversy’s central challenge to the Son’s full and eternal divinity.
