Aristoxenus

Aristoxenus was a fourth-century BCE Greek philosopher and music theorist. His surviving writings explain musical scales, rhythm, and harmony through systematic attention to musical perception.

Tetrachord: A group of four notes spanning a perfect fourth, a basic unit of ancient Greek scale construction. Aristoxenus organizes scale theory around the arrangement of notes within this four-note span.
