Arius (Christian theologian)

Arius was a 4th-century Christian presbyter from Alexandria whose teachings that the Son was not coeternal with the Father sparked a major controversy over Christian doctrine.

Nicene Christianity: Christian doctrine affirming that the Son is of one substance with the Father. Its account of the Son directly opposed the central claim associated with Arius.
Alexandrian school: A tradition of Christian scholarship centered in Alexandria, known for biblical interpretation and theological debate. Arius’s teaching emerged within Alexandria’s contentious Christian intellectual life.
