Arkhangelsk

Arkhangelsk is a port city in northwestern Russia, on the Northern Dvina River near its outlet into the White Sea. It developed as a major Russian maritime gateway before the founding of Saint Petersburg.

St. Nicholas Monastery: A medieval Orthodox monastery on the Northern Dvina delta, around which Arkhangelsk later developed. Its establishment in 1478 began the settlement that preceded the city.
Northern Dvina: A river in northwestern Russia that flows into the White Sea near Arkhangelsk. It carries inland cargo toward the city’s port and the White Sea.
Peter the Great: Russian ruler from 1682 to 1725 who expanded the state and founded Saint Petersburg. His naval reforms and new capital reduced Arkhangelsk’s primacy as Russia’s principal port.
Arkhangelsk Commercial Sea Port: A seaport in Arkhangelsk serving cargo traffic on the White Sea. It is the city’s main commercial link between inland transport and maritime shipping.
Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War: A 1918–1920 military intervention by Allied powers in Russia during the Russian Civil War. Allied forces occupied Arkhangelsk in 1918, making it a major northern theater of intervention.
Ivan the Terrible: Grand prince of Moscow from 1533 and tsar of Russia from 1547 to 1584. He ordered a fortress and port built near St. Nicholas Monastery in 1584.
Dvina Bay: A bay at the southeastern end of the White Sea, receiving the Northern Dvina. Arkhangelsk lies along its river mouth and uses the bay for sea access.
Mikhail Lomonosov: An eighteenth-century Russian polymath who made contributions to science, literature, and education. He was born in the village of Denisovka near Arkhangelsk.
Sevmash: A Russian shipbuilding enterprise based in Severodvinsk, specializing in large naval vessels. Its shipyards operate near Arkhangelsk and anchor the region’s defense industry.
Operation Barbarossa: Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union, launched on 22 June 1941. Arkhangelsk appeared in German strategic planning as a northern endpoint of the proposed A-A line.
