Armenian genocide

The Ottoman Empire’s mass deportation and killing of Armenians during World War I, beginning in 1915. Many countries recognize it as genocide; the Turkish state disputes that characterization.

Young Turk Revolution: The 1908 revolution that restored constitutional government in the Ottoman Empire and brought the Committee of Union and Progress to power. It preceded the wartime government that organized the deportations.
Tehcir Law: The Ottoman Temporary Law of Deportation, enacted on May 27, 1915, authorizing wartime population transfers. It provided a legal instrument used to deport Armenian communities.
Talaat Pasha: An Ottoman minister of the interior and grand vizier who was a leading Committee of Union and Progress figure during World War I. As interior minister, he was central to the deportation policy.
Armenian diaspora: Armenian communities living outside Armenia, formed through centuries of migration and expanded by twentieth-century displacement. Survivors and their descendants established communities across the world after the killings and deportations.
Armenian deportations: The forced removal of Ottoman Armenians from their homes, especially through the 1915–1916 deportation orders. They were the central administrative means by which Armenian communities were uprooted.
Committee of Union and Progress: An Ottoman political organization that dominated imperial government from 1913 until the empire’s defeat in World War I. Its leaders directed the wartime policies targeting Armenians.
Deportation: The forced removal of people from their homes or a territory by an authority. Armenians were driven from their homes toward destinations where many died.
Enver Pasha: An Ottoman military officer and politician who served as minister of war during World War I. He was among the leading wartime rulers of the Ottoman Empire.
Treaty of Sèvres: The 1920 peace treaty between the Ottoman Empire and the Allied Powers, which was never fully implemented. It included provisions concerning Ottoman responsibility and an Armenian state.
Musa Dagh resistance: The 1915 armed resistance of Armenian villagers on Musa Dagh against Ottoman deportation, followed by their rescue by French ships. It is a documented exception in which a community resisted deportation and survived.
