Knowra Armenian Highlands Armenian Highlands The Armenian Highlands are a mountainous region of western Asia centered on the Armenian Plateau and surrounding uplands, spanning parts of modern Armenia, Turkey, Iran, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.
Armenian Plateau : A high plateau in western Asia forming the central part of the Armenian Highlands. It is the region’s central landform and the core of its geographic identity.
Tigris : A major river of western Asia that flows south through Turkey and Iraq. Its headwaters rise in the highlands, linking them to Mesopotamian irrigation and cities.
Urartu : An Iron Age kingdom centered around Lake Van from the ninth to sixth centuries BCE. Urartu was one of the earliest states to unite much of the highlands.
Anatolia : The peninsula forming most of modern Turkey, between the Black Sea, Aegean Sea, and Mediterranean Sea. The highlands meet Anatolia to the west, with overlapping regional definitions.
Mount Ararat : A volcanic massif in eastern Turkey, traditionally associated with the biblical account of Noah’s Ark. Its prominent peaks anchor the highlands’ southern skyline and cultural geography.
Kura River : A river that flows through Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan before reaching the Caspian Sea. Its upper course connects the highlands with the South Caucasus and Caspian basin.
Kingdom of Armenia : A kingdom in the Armenian Highlands that emerged in antiquity and reached its greatest extent under Tigranes the Great. Its territorial heartland and historical legacy are closely tied to the region.
South Caucasus : The region south of the Greater Caucasus, comprising Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. The highlands’ northern uplands connect directly with the South Caucasus.
Lake Van : A large saline soda lake in eastern Turkey, within the Armenian Highlands. Its basin is one of the region’s defining enclosed landscapes.
Aras River : A river flowing through eastern Turkey, Armenia, Iran, and Azerbaijan to the Kura River. It drains the region’s eastern uplands and forms parts of modern political borders.
