Armenian national movement

A movement seeking national rights, autonomy, and independence for Armenians under Ottoman and Russian rule. Its political and revolutionary currents helped establish the First Republic of Armenia in 1918.

Armenian millet: The Ottoman Empire’s recognized Armenian religious community, governed through its own ecclesiastical institutions and communal leadership. Its institutions provided a framework for Armenian collective life before modern national politics.
Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople: The principal Armenian Apostolic ecclesiastical authority in the Ottoman capital, which also represented communal concerns to the state. The Patriarchate conveyed petitions and grievances through Ottoman channels.
Mikayel Nalbandian: A nineteenth-century Armenian writer and political thinker who advocated national awakening and social reform. His writing connected cultural renewal with aspirations for political freedom.
Armenian National Assembly: The elected body established under the Armenian National Constitution to represent the Ottoman Armenian community. Its proceedings show how national demands entered formal communal politics.
First Republic of Armenia: An independent Armenian state that existed from 1918 to 1920, centered on Yerevan. It was the movement’s clearest achievement in establishing Armenian sovereignty.
Armenian National Constitution: The 1863 Ottoman regulation that organized the Armenian community’s civil administration and representation. It formalized communal governance and sharpened debates about political representation.
Armenian Revolutionary Federation: An Armenian political party founded in 1890 that combined revolutionary activism with national self-defense and political organizing. The federation became a major organization linking local activism to broader political aims.
Raffi: The pen name of Hakob Melik-Hakobian, a nineteenth-century Armenian novelist whose works depicted national struggle and liberation. His novels popularized ideas of resistance and national self-determination.
Hamidian massacres: Mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire from 1894 to 1896 during Sultan Abdul Hamid II’s rule. The massacres intensified calls for protection and exposed the weakness of promised reforms.
Treaty of Batum: The 1918 treaty that ended hostilities between the Ottoman Empire and the First Republic of Armenia, imposing severe territorial limits. It defined the republic’s constrained initial borders after independence.
