Armoured warfare

Armoured warfare uses tanks and other protected fighting vehicles, coordinated with infantry, artillery, and air power, to achieve tactical and operational objectives.

Combined arms: The coordinated use of different military branches and weapon systems to support one another in combat. Armoured units are most effective when infantry, artillery, engineers, and aircraft compensate for their vulnerabilities.
Trench warfare: A form of warfare in which opposing forces fight from fortified trench systems. The deadlock of First World War trenches created pressure for protected vehicles able to cross obstacles and wire.
Armoured fighting vehicle: A military vehicle protected by armour and designed for combat or direct battlefield support. Armoured warfare includes a family of vehicles beyond tanks, including carriers and reconnaissance vehicles.
Deep battle: A Soviet operational theory for defeating an enemy by striking forces throughout the depth of its defensive system. Armoured and mechanized forces became key instruments for exploiting breakthroughs deep behind front lines.
Cavalry: Mounted military forces traditionally used for mobility, reconnaissance, and shock action. Tanks inherited some cavalry functions while replacing animal mobility with protected mechanical movement.
Operational maneuver: The movement and positioning of forces to achieve campaign-level objectives beyond individual engagements. Armoured formations use speed and concentration to turn tactical breakthroughs into operational gains.
Little Willie: A British experimental tracked armoured vehicle built in 1915, serving as a prototype for the tank. This early prototype helped establish the tracked vehicle form that shaped later tank development.
Tracked vehicle: A vehicle propelled by continuous tracks rather than wheels, allowing it to cross difficult terrain. Tracks give many armoured vehicles traction across soft ground and battlefield obstacles.
Armoured personnel carrier: An armoured vehicle designed mainly to transport infantry to the battlefield. The need to move troops alongside tanks drove the development of protected infantry transport.
Guerrilla warfare: Irregular warfare using small, mobile forces and ambushes against a stronger opponent. Dispersed forces and ambushes can undermine the concentration and freedom of movement armoured units require.
