Army of the Republic of Vietnam

The Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) was South Vietnam’s land force, fighting communist forces alongside the United States and other allies during the Vietnam War.

Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces: The military of South Vietnam, comprising the army, navy, air force, and territorial forces. ARVN was the largest service within this wider military establishment.
Vietnamese National Army: The armed force of the French-backed State of Vietnam from 1949 until South Vietnam’s establishment in 1955. ARVN developed from this predecessor after the Republic of Vietnam was founded.
Battle of Ap Bac: A 1963 battle in which Viet Cong forces repelled a larger South Vietnamese operation near Ap Bac village. The battle exposed weaknesses in ARVN coordination and command despite its numerical advantage.
Ngo Quang Truong: A South Vietnamese general widely regarded as one of ARVN’s most capable field commanders. His leadership in several campaigns offers a counterpoint to broad claims of uniform ARVN ineffectiveness.
Collapse of South Vietnam: The rapid disintegration of the Republic of Vietnam in the final months of the Vietnam War in 1975. The state’s collapse followed ARVN’s loss of territory, cohesion, and central command.

Battle of An Lộc: A 1972 siege in which South Vietnamese forces defended An Lộc against a major North Vietnamese assault. The defense demonstrated ARVN’s ability to withstand sustained attack with substantial air support.
Nguyen Van Thieu: A South Vietnamese general and president who led the Republic of Vietnam from 1967 to 1975. Thieu’s government controlled ARVN’s senior appointments and strategic priorities.
Vietnamese boat people: Vietnamese refugees who fled the country by sea, especially after the communist victory in 1975. Former ARVN personnel and their families were among those displaced after the defeat.
