Arne Tiselius

Arne Tiselius (1902–1971) was a Swedish biochemist who developed electrophoretic methods for separating proteins and won the 1948 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Electrophoresis: A separation method that moves charged particles through a medium under an electric field. Tiselius made electrophoresis a powerful method for analyzing mixtures of proteins.
Moving-boundary electrophoresis: An electrophoresis technique that separates dissolved substances by observing boundaries moving through a solution. This was the method Tiselius refined to analyze proteins in solution.
Serum protein electrophoresis: A laboratory method that separates blood-serum proteins according to their movement in an electric field. Tiselius used electrophoresis to distinguish major fractions of blood serum.
Theodor Svedberg: A Swedish chemist who studied colloids and developed ultracentrifugation for analyzing macromolecules. Tiselius trained under Svedberg at Uppsala, where colloid chemistry shaped his research.
Paper chromatography: A chromatographic method that separates substances as solvent moves through paper. Unlike Tiselius's moving-boundary method, it separates compounds on a stationary support.
Protein: A biological molecule made of amino-acid chains that folds into structures with specific functions. Proteins were the complex mixtures Tiselius sought to separate and characterize.
Tiselius apparatus: An optical electrophoresis instrument that records moving boundaries between components in solution. The apparatus made protein separation visible through changes in refractive index.
Blood plasma: The liquid component of blood, containing water, salts, proteins, and other dissolved substances. Plasma and serum provided protein mixtures for electrophoretic study.
Uppsala University: A Swedish university founded in 1477 and based in Uppsala. Tiselius studied and pursued much of his academic career at Uppsala University.
Column chromatography: A separation technique that passes a mixture through a packed column and collects distinct components. Column methods physically recover fractions, whereas moving-boundary electrophoresis primarily analyzes them in solution.
