Arnold Sommerfeld

Arnold Sommerfeld (1868–1951) was a German theoretical physicist whose work advanced atomic structure, quantum theory, and electrodynamics. He trained generations of physicists and developed the Sommerfeld model of the atom.

Max Born: German physicist who helped establish quantum mechanics and statistical interpretations of wave functions. Born worked with Sommerfeld in Munich and carried forward his theoretical-physics tradition.
Bohr model: An early atomic model in which electrons occupy quantized orbits around a nucleus. Sommerfeld’s model grew from Bohr’s quantized-orbit framework.
University of Königsberg: A historic university in Königsberg, Prussia, where Sommerfeld studied mathematics and science. Sommerfeld completed his doctoral studies there under the mathematician Ferdinand von Lindemann.
Sommerfeld theory of metals: A quantum model of conduction electrons in metals, based on Fermi–Dirac statistics and a free-electron approximation. Sommerfeld applied quantum statistics to improve the classical account of electronic heat capacity in metals.
Theoretical physics: The branch of physics that develops mathematical models to explain and predict natural phenomena. Sommerfeld helped define its modern institutional form through research and teaching in Munich.
Wolfgang Pauli: Austrian-born theoretical physicist who formulated the exclusion principle and helped develop quantum mechanics. Pauli studied under Sommerfeld, whose rigorous training shaped his early scientific work.
