Knowra Aromanticism Aromanticism Aromanticism is a romantic orientation characterized by experiencing little or no romantic attraction to others. It does not determine whether someone wants relationships, experiences sexual attraction, or forms close bonds.
Romantic attraction : A form of attraction involving a desire for romantic closeness or involvement with another person. Aromanticism describes experiencing little or no attraction of this kind.
Asexuality : A sexual orientation characterized by experiencing little or no sexual attraction. Aromanticism and asexuality can co-occur, but neither entails the other.
Aromantic flag : A green, white, gray, and black flag representing aromantic identities and community. Its colors provide a shared symbol for aromantic people.
Romantic love : An intimate bond characterized by romantic attachment, which can include affection, commitment, or desire for partnership. Aromanticism concerns attraction, not an inability to care deeply or love.
Sexual orientation : A pattern of sexual attraction, or its absence, toward people of particular genders. Sexual orientation is distinct from romantic orientation and can vary independently.
Aromantic spectrum : A range of identities involving little, conditional, or otherwise atypical romantic attraction. The spectrum includes experiences between and beyond consistently absent attraction.
Amatonormativity : The assumption that everyone seeks an exclusive romantic relationship and that such relationships are universally central. This social expectation can make aromantic experiences less visible or understood.
Celibacy : A choice or practice of abstaining from sexual activity, often for personal or religious reasons. Aromanticism is an orientation, not a decision to abstain from sex.
Romantic orientation : A pattern in whom someone experiences romantic attraction, if anyone. Aromanticism is one orientation within this broader framework.
Grayromantic : A romantic orientation involving romantic attraction that is rare, weak, or limited in circumstances. It names an experience near the low-attraction end of the aromantic spectrum.
