Aromaticity

Aromaticity is the unusual stability and characteristic reactivity of cyclic, conjugated systems whose electrons are delocalized around a ring. In many molecules, it is associated with Hückel’s rule of 4n + 2 π electrons.

Hückel's rule: A rule predicting aromaticity in planar, monocyclic, fully conjugated systems with 4n + 2 π electrons. It gives the familiar electron-count test for many aromatic rings.
Pi bond: A covalent bond formed by sideways overlap of orbitals, with electron density above and below the bond axis. Its electrons contribute to the delocalized circuits used in aromaticity tests.
Benzene: A six-carbon cyclic hydrocarbon with six π electrons and equivalent carbon–carbon bonds. Benzene is the canonical example of a stable, delocalized aromatic ring.
Antiaromaticity: The destabilization associated with certain planar, cyclic, fully conjugated systems containing 4n π electrons. It is the principal electronic counterpart to aromatic stabilization under Hückel’s rule.
Electrophilic aromatic substitution: A reaction in which an electrophile replaces a hydrogen or substituent on an aromatic ring. The reaction preserves the ring’s aromatic stabilization after a temporary loss of aromaticity.
Conjugation: The overlap of adjacent p orbitals that allows electrons to spread across multiple atoms. Continuous conjugation lets a ring’s π electrons delocalize around its circuit.
P orbital: An atomic orbital with two lobes, commonly oriented perpendicular to a molecular framework. Adjacent p orbitals provide the overlap pathway around an aromatic ring.
Cyclopropenyl cation: A three-carbon cyclic cation with a conjugated two-π-electron system. It demonstrates aromatic stabilization in a ring much smaller than benzene.
Nonaromaticity: The absence of aromatic or antiaromatic behavior, often because cyclic conjugation or suitable geometry is lacking. It distinguishes rings that fail aromaticity requirements from rings that are specifically destabilized.
Nuclear magnetic resonance: A spectroscopic method that probes nuclei through their response to an applied magnetic field. Aromatic ring currents shift NMR signals and provide evidence about electron delocalization.
