Aron Nimzowitsch

Aron Nimzowitsch (1886–1935) was a Latvian-born Danish chess player and theorist who helped shape hypermodern chess and wrote My System. He became known for ideas about controlling the center indirectly, blockade, and prophylaxis.

Hypermodernism: A chess movement that challenged classical central occupation by advocating indirect control of the center. Nimzowitsch was one of its leading theorists and practitioners.
Centralization (chess): The placement of pieces on or near central squares to increase their reach and influence. His indirect approach sought central influence even when pawns did not occupy the center.
Wilhelm Steinitz: The first recognized world chess champion and a founder of positional chess theory. Nimzowitsch’s strategic system developed in a chess culture shaped by Steinitz’s positional principles.
Nimzo-Indian Defense: A chess opening beginning 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4, in which Black pressures the center indirectly. The opening bears his name and exemplifies hypermodern pressure on White’s center.
Positional chess: A style of chess that prioritizes enduring advantages such as space, structure, and piece activity. Nimzowitsch expanded its vocabulary and made subtle forms of positional pressure easier to discuss.
Chess strategy: The long-term planning of piece placement, pawn structure, space, and weaknesses in chess. His concepts describe strategic aims rather than isolated tactical combinations.
Pawn chain: A diagonal formation of mutually supporting pawns in which each pawn protects the next. Nimzowitsch analyzed how to attack a pawn chain at its base.
Richard Réti: A Czechoslovakian chess player and theorist who became a leading figure in hypermodernism. Réti shared the movement’s challenge to classical central occupation and developed related opening ideas.
Nimzowitsch Defense: A chess opening beginning 1.e4 Nc6, in which Black develops the queen’s knight before challenging the center. This opening is named for Nimzowitsch and reflects his unconventional opening practice.
Fianchetto: A development pattern in which a bishop is placed on the long diagonal after a neighboring knight’s pawn advances one square. His hypermodern openings often use fianchettoed bishops to exert long-range central control.
