Arsenic trioxide

Arsenic trioxide (As₂O₃) is an inorganic arsenic compound found naturally as arsenolite and claudetite. It is a highly toxic solid used in some industrial processes and as a medicine for acute promyelocytic leukemia.

Arsenolite: A cubic mineral form of arsenic trioxide. It is one of the two naturally occurring mineral forms of this compound.
Acute promyelocytic leukemia: A subtype of acute myeloid leukemia associated with abnormal promyelocytes and the PML::RARA fusion gene. Arsenic trioxide is an established treatment for this leukemia subtype.
Arsenic minerals: Naturally occurring minerals containing arsenic as a major constituent. Arsenolite and claudetite belong to this mineral group.
Arsenic exposure: Contact with arsenic through ingestion, inhalation, or skin exposure. Arsenic trioxide is a potent source of toxic arsenic exposure.
Claudetite: A monoclinic mineral form of arsenic trioxide. It is the other naturally occurring mineral form, with a different crystal structure.
PML::RARA: A fusion protein produced by the PML::RARA gene rearrangement, which disrupts normal myeloid cell differentiation. Arsenic trioxide helps degrade this leukemia-driving protein.
Realgar: A red arsenic sulfide mineral with formula As₄S₄. Roasting realgar can produce arsenic oxides, including arsenic trioxide.
Carcinogen: An agent capable of causing cancer in humans or animals. Arsenic compounds are recognized carcinogenic hazards, making long-term exposure a serious concern.
Arsenic: A chemical element with symbol As and atomic number 33, found in several inorganic and organic compounds. Arsenic trioxide is one of arsenic’s common oxide compounds.
All-trans retinoic acid: A retinoid drug that promotes differentiation of abnormal promyelocytes in acute promyelocytic leukemia. It is often combined with arsenic trioxide in treatment regimens.
