Arsenide mineral

An arsenide mineral is a naturally occurring mineral in which arsenic is chemically combined with one or more metals, commonly forming an arsenide compound.

Arsenide: A chemical compound in which arsenic is combined with one or more less electronegative elements. The mineral group is defined by arsenide chemistry rather than by a single crystal structure.
Nickeline: A nickel arsenide mineral with the ideal formula NiAs. Nickeline is a characteristic arsenide in which nickel and arsenic form a simple 1:1 composition.
Hydrothermal mineral deposit: A mineral deposit formed when hot, chemically active fluids precipitate minerals in rock. Hydrothermal fluids can concentrate arsenic and metals that later form arsenide minerals.
Nickel mining: The extraction of nickel-bearing minerals and ores for metal production. Nickeline can occur in nickel ores, although it is not the sole source of mined nickel.
Native element mineral: A mineral composed predominantly of a single chemical element. Arsenide minerals contain chemically combined arsenic, unlike minerals made of an uncombined element.
Safflorite: A cobalt-iron arsenide mineral with a structure related to marcasite. Safflorite illustrates how arsenide minerals can adopt structures associated with sulfide minerals.
Magmatic segregation: The separation of minerals or melts from magma as they crystallize or settle. Some arsenide-bearing ores form when metal-rich components separate during magma cooling.
Cobalt mining: The extraction of cobalt-bearing ores for use in alloys, batteries, and other materials. Cobalt arsenides can occur in ores that contribute to cobalt resources.
Sulfide mineral: A mineral in which sulfur is combined with one or more metals or metalloids. Sulfides are the closest broad mineral class, with sulfur occupying the role arsenic takes here.
Löllingite: An iron arsenide mineral with the ideal formula FeAs₂. Its arsenic-rich composition contrasts with simpler metal-to-arsenic ratios such as nickeline's.
