Art market

The network of transactions, intermediaries, and institutions through which artworks are valued and bought and sold. It includes commercial galleries, auction houses, dealers, collectors, and fairs.

Art auction: A sale in which artworks are offered to bidders and sold according to competitive bids. Auction houses turn bidding into a public route for setting and recording artwork prices.
Art collector: A person or institution that acquires and maintains a collection of artworks. Collectors supply demand and can influence which artists gain visibility and value.
Art price bubble: A rapid rise in artwork prices driven partly by speculative demand and followed by sharp declines. Speculation can amplify market booms while making prices unstable and difficult to justify.
Primary art market: The market in which artworks are sold for the first time, usually by artists or their galleries. First sales establish initial prices and often shape an artist’s early commercial reputation.
Art gallery: A business or institution that exhibits and sells artworks, often representing artists. Commercial galleries build artists’ markets through representation, exhibitions, and direct sales.
Artist resale right: A legal right allowing artists or their heirs to receive royalties from certain later resales of artworks. It gives artists a possible share of value created by secondary-market sales.
Museum deaccessioning: The removal of an object from a museum’s collection, often through sale or transfer. Market prices can pressure museums to sell works, raising questions about public trust and stewardship.
Secondary art market: The market for artworks resold after their initial sale. Resales reveal how prices and demand change after an artwork enters private ownership.
Art dealer: A person or business that buys, sells, or brokers artworks. Dealers connect sellers and buyers, often negotiating privately rather than through auctions.
