Art reproduction

Art reproduction is the creation and circulation of copies or images of artworks through print and digital media. It ranges from handmade prints to photographic and digital surrogates.

Woodcut: A relief-printing technique in which an image is carved into a wooden block and printed from its raised surface. Woodcuts made repeatable images of artworks before photography.
Marcantonio Raimondi: An Italian Renaissance engraver known for translating designs by Raphael and other artists into prints. His Raphael reproductions helped establish printmaking as a vehicle for circulating art.
Art catalog: A publication or database that describes and documents artworks in a collection or exhibition. Catalogs use reproductions to identify and compare works across collections.
The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction: Walter Benjamin’s 1935 essay on how mechanical copying changes art’s authority, reception, and politics. Benjamin made the consequences of mass art reproduction a central theoretical question.
