Arthur Cayley

Arthur Cayley (1821–1895) was an English mathematician who helped establish modern abstract algebra and advanced matrix theory, group theory, and geometry.

Group theory: The mathematical study of groups, structures that encode symmetry through an operation. Cayley helped establish the abstract study of groups and gave the subject foundational results.
Cayley–Hamilton theorem: The theorem stating that every square matrix satisfies its own characteristic polynomial. This result links a matrix’s characteristic polynomial directly to the matrix itself.
James Joseph Sylvester: An English mathematician who made foundational contributions to algebra, number theory, and matrix theory. Sylvester was Cayley’s close collaborator in invariant theory and matrix algebra.
Cayley–Dickson algebra: An algebra produced by the Cayley–Dickson construction, including the quaternions and octonions. The construction extended familiar number systems and exposed how algebraic laws can fail in larger systems.
Matrix: A rectangular array of numbers or other entries used to represent linear transformations and organize equations. Cayley developed matrix algebra and helped make matrices objects of study in their own right.
Cayley’s theorem: The theorem that every group is isomorphic to a subgroup of a symmetric group. It realizes any abstract group as a group of permutations, clarifying the meaning of group structure.
George Boole: An English mathematician and logician who developed an algebraic system for logic. Boole shared Cayley’s generation of British mathematicians and helped transform algebra into a more abstract discipline.
Octonion: An eight-dimensional nonassociative normed division algebra extending the real numbers, complex numbers, and quaternions. Cayley’s work helped establish the octonions as a distinct algebraic system.
Invariant theory: The study of quantities that remain unchanged under transformations, especially in algebra and geometry. Cayley’s work on forms and transformations helped shape this field.
Cayley transform: A transformation that maps suitable matrices or operators to unitary or orthogonal ones, and vice versa. The construction bears Cayley’s name and connects matrix operations with structured transformation groups.
