Sherlock Holmes : A fictional detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle, known for observation, deduction, and cases narrated by Dr. Watson. Holmes became Doyle’s most enduring creation, though Doyle grew frustrated with the character’s fame.
Edinburgh : The capital of Scotland and a major center of education, medicine, and publishing. Doyle grew up in Edinburgh and studied medicine at its university.
Louise Hawkins : Arthur Conan Doyle’s first wife, known as Touie, whom he married in 1885. Her tuberculosis and declining health influenced Doyle’s personal life during his rising literary career.
The Hound of the Baskervilles : A 1902 Sherlock Holmes novel in which a family legend about a supernatural hound surrounds a murder investigation. The novel revived Holmes after Doyle had killed him off in an earlier story.
The Reichenbach Falls : A Swiss waterfall where Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty apparently fall to their deaths in Doyle’s 1893 story. Doyle’s decision to end Holmes there provoked strong public protest and later required a return.
Professor Challenger : A fictional scientist and adventurer created by Arthur Conan Doyle, first appearing in The Lost World. Challenger shows Doyle’s range beyond detective fiction, especially in adventure and speculative science.
University of Edinburgh : A public research university in Edinburgh, founded in 1583. Doyle’s medical education and meeting with Joseph Bell took place there.
Jean Leckie : Arthur Conan Doyle’s second wife, whom he married in 1907 after the death of his first wife. Their relationship became central to Doyle’s later family life.
The Great Boer War : Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1900 account of the Second Boer War, written after he volunteered as a physician in South Africa. Doyle used his medical service and reporting to address a contemporary conflict.
The Adventure of the Empty House : A 1903 Sherlock Holmes story explaining the detective’s survival after the Reichenbach Falls and return to London. Its publication fulfilled the demand that led Doyle to bring Holmes back.
