Articulated bus

An articulated bus has two or more rigid sections connected by a pivoting joint. The joint lets the sections bend while the vehicle turns, increasing passenger capacity without requiring a separate trailer.

Articulation joint: A mechanical connection that lets joined vehicle sections pivot relative to one another while transmitting forces between them. It connects the bus sections and governs their movement through turns.
Bus rapid transit: A bus-based transit system using features such as dedicated lanes and priority at intersections to improve speed and reliability. Articulated buses commonly provide high passenger capacity on busy rapid-transit corridors.
Chassis: The structural frame and running gear that support a vehicle's body, powertrain, and loads. It carries the loads distributed across the bus's separate sections.
Bi-articulated bus: A bus made of three rigid sections joined by two articulation joints. It extends the articulated-bus design to carry still more passengers.
Bogie: A wheeled chassis assembly that supports a vehicle and may pivot relative to its body. Some articulated buses use a rear bogie to support the trailing section and influence cornering.
Public transport bus: A road vehicle that carries passengers on scheduled public transit services. Articulated buses are a high-capacity form of this broader vehicle type.
Steering system: The mechanisms that control the direction in which a vehicle's wheels travel. Front steering and joint motion together determine the articulated bus's path.
Trailer bus: A passenger bus that tows a separate trailer designed to carry additional passengers. Its trailer is a distinct towed unit, unlike the integrated pivoting sections of an articulated bus.
Jackknifing: A loss-of-control condition in which connected vehicle sections fold sharply at their joint. Excessive articulation can cause this hazard, especially under braking on slippery roads.
Double-decker bus: A bus with passenger seating on two levels. It provides high capacity through vertical space rather than a pivoting rear section.
