Artificial organ

An artificial organ is a man-made device or engineered tissue that replaces, supports, or supplements the function of a biological organ.

Hemodialysis: A treatment that removes waste and excess fluid from blood using a dialysis machine. It substitutes for some kidney functions when the kidneys cannot filter blood adequately.
Biocompatibility: The ability of a material or device to perform its intended function in contact with living tissue. Artificial organs must avoid harmful reactions while remaining functional inside or alongside the body.
Organ: A body structure made of multiple tissue types that performs specific functions. Artificial organs are designed around the functions of these biological structures.
Organ transplant waiting list: A system for prioritizing patients awaiting donated organs for transplantation. Artificial support can sustain some patients while they wait for a donor organ.
Left ventricular assist device: An implanted pump that helps the heart circulate blood. It supports a failing heart without replacing the whole organ.
Hemocompatibility: The compatibility of a material or device with blood, including its effects on clotting and blood cells. Blood-contacting devices must limit clot formation and damage to blood cells.
Organ failure: A condition in which an organ can no longer perform enough of its normal functions. Loss of organ function is the central problem artificial organs are built to address.
Bridge to transplantation: A treatment strategy that keeps a patient stable until an organ transplant becomes available. Mechanical circulatory support can serve this temporary role for people with severe heart failure.
Cochlear implant: An implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound by stimulating the auditory nerve. It replaces part of the inner ear’s sound-processing function.
Tissue engineering: The design of biological substitutes that restore, maintain, or improve tissue function. Engineered tissues can form living components of artificial organs.
