Arts funding

Arts funding is financial support for creating, presenting, preserving, or studying art, provided by public agencies, private organizations, individuals, or charitable institutions.

Grant: A sum of money awarded for a specified purpose, usually without repayment. Arts grants let funders support projects or organizations through defined application and reporting processes.
Public funding: Financial support provided by government bodies using public revenue. Public funding is one major source of arts support, accountable to public institutions and policy.
Artistic freedom: The ability of artists to create and present work without undue restriction. Funding conditions can either protect artistic independence or expose work to funder influence.
National Endowment for the Arts: An independent United States federal agency that funds and promotes the arts. It exemplifies federal grantmaking for nonprofit arts organizations and projects.
Arts Council: A public or quasi-public body that supports and develops artistic activity. Arts councils commonly distribute public arts funding and advise on cultural policy.
Private foundation: A charitable organization that distributes funds from an endowment or donations. Foundations can set independent priorities that differ from government arts programs.
Censorship: The suppression or restriction of expression by an authority or other controlling party. Funding withdrawals and eligibility rules can become tools for restricting controversial art.
Arts Council England: A public body that distributes government and National Lottery funding for arts and culture in England. Its funding programs show how public support can operate through an arm's-length arts council.
Endowment: A donated fund invested to generate income for an institution or cause. Endowments can provide arts organizations with recurring income beyond annual fundraising.
Corporate sponsorship: Financial or material support provided by a business in exchange for recognition or other benefits. Corporate sponsorship links arts support to commercial visibility and brand relationships.
