Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by inhaled asbestos fibers. It produces inflammation and scarring in lung tissue, often causing progressive breathlessness.

Asbestos: Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring fibrous silicate minerals once widely used for heat resistance and strength. Its inhaled fibers lodge in the lungs and initiate the disease.
Dyspnea: Dyspnea is the subjective experience of difficult or uncomfortable breathing. Progressive exertional breathlessness is a common symptom as lung scarring advances.
Mesothelioma: Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs or other body cavities, strongly associated with asbestos exposure. It is a distinct asbestos-related disease, not scarring of lung tissue.
Lung cancer: Lung cancer is a malignant growth arising in the lungs, often associated with tobacco smoke and certain occupational exposures. Asbestos exposure raises lung-cancer risk, especially when combined with smoking.
Pulmonary fibrosis: Pulmonary fibrosis is the formation of scar tissue in the lungs that stiffens them and impairs gas exchange. Asbestosis is a specific cause of this broader pattern of lung scarring.
Pulmonary function testing: Pulmonary function testing measures lung volumes, airflow, and gas transfer to assess respiratory function. It can reveal reduced lung volumes and impaired gas transfer.
Asbestos-related lung cancer: Asbestos-related lung cancer is a malignant tumor of lung tissue linked to asbestos exposure. Unlike asbestosis, it is a cancer, though both can follow the same exposure.
Respiratory failure: Respiratory failure occurs when the lungs cannot provide adequate oxygenation or remove carbon dioxide. Advanced lung damage can impair gas exchange enough to cause respiratory failure.
Alveoli: Alveoli are tiny air sacs in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide pass between air and blood. Fibrosis around these air sacs reduces oxygen transfer.
High-resolution computed tomography: High-resolution computed tomography is a detailed CT imaging technique that depicts fine structures within the lungs. It can show characteristic patterns of interstitial scarring.
