Ascus

An ascus is a saclike cell in ascomycete fungi where sexual spores develop, usually in groups of eight.

Ascospore: A sexual spore formed inside an ascus. This is the reproductive cell that develops within the ascus.
Ascomycota: A major fungal phylum whose members form sexual spores in asci. The ascus is the defining sexual structure of this fungal group.
Unitunicate ascus: An ascus with a single functional wall that opens to discharge spores. Its single wall is one common structural arrangement.
Fungal taxonomy: The classification of fungi using evolutionary relationships and diagnostic traits. Ascus shape, walls, and spore arrangement are useful classification characters.
