Ashcan School

An early 20th-century American art movement whose painters depicted ordinary urban life, especially working-class neighborhoods and street scenes in New York City.

Robert Henri: An American painter and teacher who urged artists to depict contemporary life with directness and energy. His teaching and leadership helped bind the Ashcan painters into a movement.
