Ashikaga Takauji

Ashikaga Takauji founded the Ashikaga shogunate and became its first shogun in 1338. His rise helped divide Japan between rival Northern and Southern Courts.

Kamakura shogunate: Japan’s first enduring military government, established by the Minamoto clan in 1192 and based at Kamakura. Takauji initially served this regime before joining the revolt that brought it down.
Battle of Minatogawa: A 1336 battle in which Takauji’s forces defeated the army of Emperor Go-Daigo’s loyalists near modern Kobe. The victory cleared Takauji’s path to Kyoto and a new political settlement.
Kō no Moronao: A powerful Ashikaga military commander who served Takauji and opposed his brother Tadayoshi. Moronao’s factional rivalry with Tadayoshi intensified divisions within Takauji’s government.
Nanboku-chō period: The period of warfare between Japan’s Northern and Southern imperial courts, lasting from 1336 to 1392. Takauji’s support for the Northern Court initiated this prolonged division.
Emperor Go-Daigo: The Japanese emperor who led a failed attempt to restore direct imperial rule in the 1330s. Takauji first fought for Go-Daigo, then turned against him over the new political order.
Northern and Southern Courts: The rival imperial courts that contested Japan’s legitimacy and sovereignty from 1336 to 1392. Takauji backed the Northern Court while Go-Daigo established the Southern Court.
Ashikaga Yoshiakira: Takauji’s son and successor as the second Ashikaga shogun. Yoshiakira inherited a regime still troubled by the conflicts of his father’s reign.
Onin War: A civil war fought in Kyoto from 1467 to 1477 that accelerated the collapse of central authority. The Ashikaga system Takauji founded later proved unable to prevent this shogunal succession crisis.
Genkō War: The 1331–1333 conflict in which Emperor Go-Daigo’s supporters overthrew the Kamakura shogunate. Takauji’s victories during this revolt made him a leading military power.
Ashikaga shogunate: The military government that ruled Japan from 1336 to 1573 under the Ashikaga family. Takauji founded this government after taking Kyoto and installing a rival emperor.
